The surface of a modern disk platter that spins at 5400 or more RPMs, is highly polished glass, with a precisely dispersed mix of metal oxide. The oxide is pulsed by the electromagnet in the head that flies very close to the surface of the disk platter.
The surface of the disk platter and heads “crashing” is the most common root cause of a failure.
